Customers don't just look at plastic parts they touch them. A washer button, a vacuum handle or a device housing is judged by how it feels and how its surface reflects light. That's why finish and texture matter as much as colour. Here are the most popular plastic paint finishes in new year.
1. Soft-touch: velvety, and now tougher
Soft-touch coatings give plastic a velvety, silky or rubbery feel and are popular on automotive interior trim, controls, electronics housings and handles. Today they come in matte, rubberised, silky and anti-scuff variants, including waterborne systems. A new year appliance colour report also points to suede-like and skin-feel materials to make appliances feel warmer.
2. Matte and anti-fingerprint
Matte surfaces remain popular in appliances, and according to Sirius Buying Group, demand for matte black and white appliances stays firm in new year. The challenge with dark matte surfaces is fingerprints and anti-fingerprint and self-cleaning functional coatings are spreading precisely for these high-touch surfaces.
3. Piano gloss with a hard clear coat
Piano-black gloss looks deep and premium, but on plastic it shows scratches and fingerprints clearly. The answer is a multi-layer system with a scratch-resistant hard clear coat, especially for housings and panels that are touched all the time.
4. Liquid metal and metallic looks
A new year appliance colour report from China cites liquid-metal and metallic textures to convey technology and industrial precision. In automotive, BASF's forecast key colour Phygital Magnetar was presented with a calm, expressive surface. On plastic, this look comes from fine metallic paints in two- or three-coat systems.
5. Chrome-look: metal mirror without plating
Chrome-look paints give plastic an effect close to plated metal and are used on decorative parts, cosmetic packaging caps and appliance details. For durability, they are usually finished with a protective clear coat. Where a full mirror finish is required, processes such as vacuum metallising are also available.
6. Fine texture and pearl
Fine-texture coatings hide moulding defects like weld lines and sink marks and stand up better to everyday scuffs a logical choice for industrial device cases and technical parts. Pearl (pearlescent) effects add a soft shimmer and a subtle colour shift with viewing angle, giving appliances and cosmetic products a refined look.
Choosing the right finish
- Handled constantly? Anti-scuff soft-touch or anti-fingerprint matte.
- Moulding defects to hide? Fine texture or matte covers them best.
- Want a premium look? Piano gloss with a hard clear, metallic or chrome-look.
- Polycarbonate part? Choose a paint and clear system compatible with PC's solvent sensitivity.
